Portrait of Thomas Jefferson As Karl Marx, Alastair MacKinven (2009, Collage, folded posters)

“MacKinven’s Jefferson series is comprised of folded posters awkwardly crammed into frames. When outspread the signs each reveal a portrait, bought by MacKinven, of a socialist philosopher. The concept of these works was inspired by the first American president Thomas Jefferson: a true revolutionary, Jefferson had many pastimes –ranging from architecture to palaeontology – which were approached with utopian zeal, emphasising progress and the correction of history’s flaws. In 1819, Jefferson completed his own version of The Bible, from which he edited out anything that did not support his own ideological beliefs. In Portrait of Thomas Jefferson as Karl Marx, MacKinven’s portrait of Marx is crumpled to create a crudely cropped caricature. MacKinven feels Marx is often cited only in part by people who ‘pick and choose’ convenient aspects of socialism to correspond with their petit bourgeois lifestyles.”

The International Discourse Coloring Contest, conceived by Ian James and executed during CalArts’ MFA Graduate Exhibition, ‘Why Theory’ in 2009 is possibly the ur-event of critical theorist fan art, a treasure trove of quotidian interpretations and phiLOLsophy. The staging of the installation is pure gold too:

Hung on the wall, gallery visitors were encouraged to sit at a kid’s school table, color and post them to the bulletin board. Individually sequenced coloring books were assembled for take away and a small boombox played theory texts on cassette tape, as read by “Vicki,” an Apple Speech voice simulator.

Expect more from this brilliant event.

Immanuel Kant: German Philosopher specializing in Epistemology, Ethics, Logic, and the Theology of the Dark Carnival. His most famous work The Critique of Pure Reason laid the basis of Kantian thought. In later years Kant sought to rectify his philosophy with that of The Mirthful Prophets. Results were often mixed, but where he succeeded he was able to reveal great flashes of insight.

It’s not the only photo that I’ve found of him sporting an upturned collar, which is a gesture of defiance toward an uncaring universe into which he was thrown without any say in the matter.
